Trey Burke is a native of Columbus, Ohio. He attended Northland High School, where he was a five-star recruit and was ranked as the number four overall recruit in the country by ESPN in 2012. He was also named a McDonald’s All-American that same year. After high school, Burke committed to the University of Michigan, where he played for four years. During his college career, he became the first player in school history to be named the Big Ten Player of the Year, as well as the first player in school history to be named the National Player of the Year, after leading the nation in scoring with an average of 20.4 points per game in his final season.

In his four-year college career, Burke averaged 14.3 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He also shot 44.3% from the field, 34.6% from three-point range, and 86.7% from the free-throw line. He is the all-time leading scorer in Michigan history, and he holds the record for most assists in a single season, with 259 in his senior season. He was also the first player in Big Ten history to reach the 2,000-point and 600-assist milestone.
