Has a Black Coach Ever Won Final Four?
The Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament is one of the most prestigious and exciting tournaments in all of sports. Every year, college basketball fans around the world look forward to seeing which teams will make it to the Final Four and who will ultimately be crowned the National Champions. While the tournament has been around for decades, it has only been in recent years that the presence of Black coaches has been truly felt. So, has a Black coach ever won the Final Four?
A Brief History of Black Coaches in Basketball
Black coaches have been a part of the college basketball landscape for nearly as long as the sport has existed. The first Black coach to lead a team in the NCAA Tournament was Fred Hobdy, who coached Texas Southern in 1961. Since then, a number of other Black coaches have made their mark in college basketball, including John Thompson, Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith, and John Calipari.
Black Coaches and the Final Four
While Black coaches have had a long and successful history in college basketball, they have not had much success when it comes to the Final Four. In fact, no Black coach has ever won the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament. The closest a Black coach has come to winning a National Championship was John Thompson, who led Georgetown to the NCAA Championship game in 1984. Unfortunately, the Hoyas lost that game to the University of Houston.
Why Have Black Coaches Struggled to Win the Final Four?
The lack of success for Black coaches in the Final Four is not due to a lack of talent or effort. Rather, it is due to a number of factors, such as a lack of resources and institutional support. For example, many of the top programs in college basketball are located in the South, where there is often a lack of support for Black coaches. Additionally, Black coaches often struggle to get the same level of funding and resources as their white counterparts.

With more Black coaches entering the ranks of college basketball, there is increased hope that one day a Black coach will win the Final Four.
