Early Life and Education
Adam Silver was born on April 25, 1962 in Rye, New York. He attended Rye High School, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team and graduated in 1980. He went on to Duke University where he graduated with a degree in political science in 1984.
Career Before the NBA
Before becoming Commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver had a lengthy career in sports business. After graduating from Duke, he worked for ProServ, a sports and entertainment marketing firm. He then worked at the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York, where he specialized in media and sports law.
In 1992, he joined the NBA as Special Assistant to the Commissioner. He was then promoted to Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the NBA in 1996.
Work in the NBA
In 2006, Adam Silver was appointed NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he was responsible for all of the league’s business and operations, including broadcast and digital media, marketing, and international growth. He also negotiated collective bargaining agreements with the players’ union.
In 2014, Adam Silver was named the fifth Commissioner of the NBA, succeeding David Stern. He has since led the NBA to unprecedented success, with revenue increasing from $4.8 billion in 2014 to $8.8 billion in 2019.
