Fresno State has a long and storied history of excellence on the field and in the classroom, but has the school ever won a national championship? The answer is yes, but with some caveats.
Fresno State Football National Championship
Fresno State’s football team has had some great success but has never won a national championship. The Bulldogs have been to seven bowl games since 1982, when they first joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). They won three of those games, including a 34-10 victory over Colorado State in the 2000 Silicon Valley Football Classic, which was the first bowl victory in school history. However, they have not been to a bowl game since 2016, and have not won a conference championship since 2013. Despite their successes, they have yet to win a national title.
Fresno State Basketball National Championship
The Fresno State basketball team has had much more success, winning the WAC tournament in 2002 and reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2003. - NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship – Fresno State has had over 100 student-athletes earn NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, which are awarded to student-athletes for their academic and athletic achievements.
- NCAA Team Academic Excellence Award – Fresno State has won the NCAA Team Academic Excellence Award several times, most recently in 2020. This award is given to teams that have achieved a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher.
